Blue Light From Your Phone May Be As Damaging For Your Skin As The Sun, Say Experts

Blue light filters have become an increasingly common sight on most mobile devices. In fact, if you check your phone now you’ll find the feature built-in. This is after studies have shown that extended exposure to blue light, especially closer to the evening, can disrupt your circadian rhythm. In turn, you may find it more difficult to fall asleep.

However, there’s more bad news for those of us constantly exposed to the blue light on our screens.

As it turns out, your skin can age prematurely as a result of being exposed to blue light from your devices. In fact, it can be as bad as exposing your skin to the sun, according to Melbourne-based professional dermatologist Dr Shyamalar Gunatheesan.

While your phone may not be as powerful as the sun, it can cause problems of its own. This can very from hyperpigmentation, mottling, to premature ageing and dry skin.

In fact, your skin suffers as much damage as being under the sun for 25 minutes, simply by using your phone for six hours a day, five days a week.

It only takes seven minutes for your skin to start tanning with maximum screen brightness.

The claims are corroborated by a study conducted by scientists from multinational consumer goods giant Unilever, who raised concerns over the negative impacts of prolonged exposure to blue-light in the wake of a mass global migration to virtual offices and online mediums.

“Blue light can penetrate the skin far deeper that UV light, passing through the epidermis and dermis to the subcutis layer.

It can induce both immediate and persistent pigmentation, which can still be present after three months.” they said.

Samantha Tucker-Samaras, Global VP of Science & Technology, Beauty & Personal Care at Uniliver goes on to point out that consumers should use skincare products that protect against UV exposure, even when indoors. This means using skincare products that contain antioxidants, as well as niacinamide and zinc oxide in their list of active ingredients.

Using blue-light filters can also protect your skin from electronic UV light exposure. For a truly long-term solution however, your best bet is still in limiting your screen-time.
