One Key Hormone May Be The Reason Behind Bad Lockdown Skin

We don’t talk about hormones quite nearly enough when we discuss skincare. But when we do, we usually pin the blame on estrogen or testosterone. After all, they determine such functions as collagen production skin hydration, and even wound healing. While that may be true, there happens to be one key hormone that skincare fails to discuss. Cortisol.

For the uninitiated, cortisol is often known as the ‘stress hormone‘ or the ‘fight-or-flight’ hormone. Used by your brain to control aspects that include your mood and fear, it is produced by your adrenal glans.  These glans also produce another more familiar hormone: adrenalin.

But back to cortisol.  Typically produced when the body perceives a threat, this hormone can elevate your heart rate and raise your blood pressure. But it can also do a few other things that primarily affect the appearance of your skin.

If you’ve noticed more pimples popping up despite you staying home during lockdown, that may be cortisol’s dirty work. This includes the breaking down of collagen and elastin, both which are naturally occurring proteins in your skin. When broken down by cortisol, the lack of both proteins can cause fine lines and wrinkles to appear, as well as accelerate signs of ageing.

Acne flare-ups that happen right before stressful situations (think presentations, speeches, etc) can also be linked to the effects of cortisol. This is due to how cortisol can escalate the production of sebum on your skin as part of your body’s defense mechanisms. Excess sebum is consumed by Propionibacterium acnes, the bacteria responsible for acne in the skin, leading to breakouts.

To combat high levels of cortisol, proper hydration and relaxation are key. Take a moment out of your day to unwind and breathe. You may also consider doing a sheet mask for proper indulgence. But if your skin concerns persist, it might be time to visit a skincare professional!
